I was so excited to come back from the library with my new book called the Starving Time. The book was about a girl and her family moving to Jamestown in the early 1600’s. She has been writing in her journal through the good and bad times. But don’t think that it was an easy going trip. There were so many hardships such as when her mom died or when she had to leave her twin brother behind! I was so sad that this book ended so I’m going to continue the book in my own words.
Oh my gosh!!!! I can’t believe that Caleb was home. I missed him so much, and it seems like forever since I’ve been with my twin brother. However, I’m also nervous because somehow I have to break it to him that our mom is dead. Oh how I miss that dear heart of hers and how she makes me so happy. But anyway, it is about 12 in the afternoon. The sun has been shining and a brisk wind feels refreshing on our bodies. Caleb and I sit in the field where we talk about the loss of mom and the adventures we experienced. He was telling me about the slaves he saw in England and a new friend he made. I told him about Pocahontas and how she befriended our village. It was so good to be back with Caleb, although we both missed mother dearly.
The peacefulness of the day was interrupted. Suddenly, four Indians surrounded us. Two grabbed Caleb and other two nabbed me. I was so scared, I couldn’t even scream. I was wondering why they would grab us, but then I had a flashback to the mistreatment that the English gave some of the Indians. What would they do with us? When would we get back home? Is Papa going to be worried? I can’t stand the thought of him having one more worry.
The Indians took us to a cave. We were given food and water, but it wasn’t good food. With the hardships and hunger I had been through, I knew I shouldn’t complain about how the food tasted. Caleb was screaming harder than I had ever heard him before. I could tell he was scared by the look in his eyes.
We weren’t sure what the Indians wanted with us. Would they harm us or keep us hostage? What could they possibly want with two children under the age of 13?
To our relief, Pocahontas showed up. She was looking for her father and found us instead. To my dismay, Pocahontas didn’t seem interested in helping us. She told us that we were captured by her authority because of the food we had stolen from the Indians. I tried telling her that we didn’t do it, it was others from the village. She seemed not to care and said, “If one steals, all steal.”
They kept us in this dark, damp and cold cave for days and days. After a week Caleb and I contracted smallpox. As it turned out, the smallpox was a good thing. The Indians were so afraid of it that they let us go. We made our way back to the village. We were immediately taken to the medical tent and spent a month there. After a month Caleb and I were both back to normal and Papa was so thankful to have us both back.
I think my extended version was a good add on to the book. I wrote about adventures that could have occurred at that time in history. It also showed that Caleb and I would be around for Papa and to help him get through the times without Mama. I am glad that there are more books in this series, and I plan to read some of them.
