Discrimination
Ever since the Native Americans lived on this land, to the colonists settling to call this land America, to slavery, to black discrimination, our country has always found a way to make things unfair for one. I am currently reading The Outsiders, in this book there is a gang called the Greasers who get discriminated by their looks. Most of the gang grew up with no family at all or non supporting families. While this hurt is on the greasers they have to worry about one more thing, the socs. The socs are a group of rich, popular, snooty, judgmental, kids whose first attacker is always the Greasers. The greasers are left to find everything in life, while somehow being judged on the way. “Each of us is a book waiting to be written, and that book, if written, results in a person explained.” This quote is by Thomas M. Cirignano. Why I think this relates to the Greasers is they all haven’t found themselves yet, and just because there not the richest, cleanest, best group to hang around doesn’t mean something good isn’t going to come out of the group.
On April 12, 1861, the civil war broke out. The North fought the south to free the slaves; this is a great example of discrimination against looks. Hundreds of thousands, little miracles died to make a point that African Americans don’t have a beating heart, don’t deserve a life. This is just wrong, that humans got judged on the color of their skin, and the worst part is, they thought it was right. Why this relates to the Outsiders is they had a tough time in society not making it through based on looks and background.
Next, the holocaust, Adolf Hitler set a mission to make all the Jewish people in Europe by making them suffer at concentration camps. Millions of Jews died from starvation, dehydration, and forced death. Just because they had a different religion doesn’t mean they deserved to suffer, to die, and to be separated from their loved ones. Once again people judged thinking oh yea they don’t matter their different from us. In the outsiders people just assume that all the do is jump people, kill, drink, smoke, which is not true. This is related because people judged and hated on people who might have been a little bit different which is how most things go these days.
People are starting to realize that it’s not right to judge. We as a nation, as a continent, as a world, could have saw that two hundred years ago; we could have saved millions of people. The holocaust, and slavery aren’t just the only two examples of judging, I can think of at least ten off the top of my head. In the outsiders I haven’t finished the book but majority of people judge, but I have noticed throughout the book that 4 or 5 people get to know the person first, and I am thankful for those people. The note that I have been trying to get through is don’t judge a book by it’s cover, judge it by what’s inside.
